Winter Holidays In Lanzarote
The summer season may have come to an end across Europe. But there´s still one far flung EU outpost where the sun continues to shine throughout the winter months. As the Spanish owned Canary Islands are located hundreds of mile south of the mainland. Just off the coast of West Africa.
As a result these seven islands enjoy great weather all year round. And are just four hours flying time away from popular markets such as the UK and Germany. With plenty of flights available from Scandinavia too. Despite the current economic climate islands such as Lanzarote still expect to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors this winter. So what can they expect from their winter holiday in Lanzarote?
There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy days at the beach as temperatures on Lanzarote rarely fall below 20 degrees Celsius. With rainfall virtually non existent. And the island boasts over ninety great beaches to explore.
Winter sun seekers should opt for the resorts of Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen, as these enjoy a more southerly and protected location. Enjoying more sunshine hours and better weather than the north of the island.
There are plenty of excellent accommodation options to choose from too. With Playa Blanca especially offering one of the best selections of hotels and holiday villas in Lanzarote. Prices during the winter months start from around €500 for a two bedroom property with private pool.
In the unlikely event of bad weather Lanzarote also offers loads for visitors to do and see. Including natural wonders such as the awe inspiring Timanfaya Volcano Park and the Green Lagoon at El Golfo through to the incredible man made creations of the local artist César Manrique. Who worked with Lanzarote´s volcanic terrain to create visitor attractions such as the Jameos del Agua. Where he transformed a collapsed lava tunnel into an underground concert venue and nightclub.
There are also lots of picturesque and historic towns and villages to explore. Such as the former island capital of Teguise – the first Spanish settlement in the Canaries dating back to the 1400´s. Which is home to some fine examples of Spanish colonial architecture – such as the Palacio Spinola, now a fascinating house museum.

Lanzarote certainly offers an escape from the grey, wet and cold UK winters. We see an annual influx of pensioners for 3 to 6 months from October to March who we fondly refer to as the swallows! They arrive all pale and seemingly to have really aged since the previous year and then within a couple of weeks they are back to normal as we know them – tanned brown and a spring in their step!
Have you booked your winter holiday or something to look forward to for summer 2010? Try Lanzarote, if you’ve not been yet – you should!
